Backing outlier founders. Early, with conviction.

We partner with the most ambitious founders from CEE, building globally from inception. We aim to be their first or second investor and a trusted sparring partner as they navigate early challenges.
We believe exceptional people with unreasonable commitment tend to find a way. So we back them early and trust them to find a path to exceptional outcomes.

Who are we looking for?

We look for exceptional talent across CEE and its diaspora – founders, engineers, operators or people who haven’t started yet but already have the aspiration. We try to get to know them early, often before anything is fully formed, focusing less on what exists today and more on how they think, what drives them and how they approach hard problems. We believe exceptional people with unreasonable commitment tend to find a way, so we back them early and trust them to find a path to exceptional outcomes. We are not rigidly thesis-driven, the best founders are working on ideas that don’t fit neatly into existing boxes yet. We are drawn to people who are uninterested in noise, but care about what they build and its impact.

How we work

When the time comes, we aim to be the first or second investor and lead rounds with conviction. We intentionally back a small number of companies so we can spend time where it actually matters: product, GTM, hiring and fundraising – helping founders build the core of their company and prepare for what comes next. But we don’t believe in overstepping or mistaking activity for value. We don’t force our way in, we don’t try to steer from the sidelines and we don’t pretend to know better. Once we invest, we trust founders to make the right decisions. Our role is to challenge when needed, support when it counts and stay honest throughout.
People behind the partnerships
We work side by side with founders – thinking through hiring, fundraising or GTM – as they build companies meant to go beyond CEE.

Mark joined Portfolion in 2019 and today leads the firm’s early-stage venture investing alongside Daniel. He has backed companies including SEON, FLOWX.AI, Kodesage, Tiney, NORBr, Riptides, and Tresorit (acquired in 2021). A defining part of Mark’s journey has been his long-standing board role at SEON, which began when the company had just a few hundred thousand in ARR. Being close to the intense journey of scaling the company shaped his view of what exceptional looks like — and what it takes to build it. He brings that experience to partner with the most ambitious founders with Central and Eastern European roots, and be a reliable partner through key inflection points — from the earliest days through scaling to $100M+ ARR. Before Portfolion, Mark was part of BlackRock’s global fundamental fixed income portfolio management team. He holds a Master’s in Finance from Corvinus University and a CEMS Master’s in Management, including studies at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Outside of work, Mark loves spending time with his wife and young daughter — especially traveling together.

Daniel joined Portfolion in 2020 as an Investment Analyst and has been talking to founders ever since. As part of a small, hands-on team investing across the Eastern European venture ecosystem, he focuses on early-stage companies, working closely with founders to understand products, markets, and the data behind them. Daniel most often works with founders building in cybersecurity, developer tooling, IT infrastructure, enterprise software, and applied AI. He has a soft spot for technical founders who are their own first customers and for teams taking on complex, overlooked, or seemingly “unsexy” problems with ambition. At Portfolion, Daniel currently works closely with the teams of SEON, Deskbird, NORBr, Uvionix, Riptides, and Kodesage. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Corvinus University of Budapest and a Master’s degree in Finance from Central European University. Outside of work, he enjoys playing racket sports and basketball, hiking, cooking, and tasting the world.

Associate

Rado is based in Prague and focusing on super early-stage investments in a broad range of sectors. He gravitates to founders building at the edge of technology in areas where innovation can translate into tangible impact on people’s lives (e.g., healthtech, techbio or robotics). Before venture, Rado took a less conventional route through industrial/tech policy and banking. Swapping structured institutions for the beautiful chaos of startups felt less like a career move and more like an awakening. He describes himself as a (cautious) techno-optimist and a stubborn believer in Europe’s potential. He is particularly bullish on European talent and advocates for smarter (de)regulation and stronger integration as key enablers for turning the region into a global tech powerhouse. Rado holds a BA from King’s College London and an MSc from the London School of Economics. He is also very good at collecting degrees and then working in something only loosely related to them. Outside of work, Rado spends most of his time staying active, loves traveling and sports. He values time with family and friends above all else and finds inspiration in fine art.

Donát Simon

Senior Investment Analyst

Donat is Investment Analyst in the early-stage venture capital team at Portfolion, working closely with founders from day one – and often even before – of company building. He joined the firm in early 2025 after roles at Boston Consulting Group and Morgan Stanley. At BCG, Donat worked on projects analyzing CEE markets, and helped test and develop new AI tools for case use. During his studies, Donat researched what makes regional companies resilient to change, participated in the Hungarian Startup University Program, and completed an exchange semester in Frankfurt. There, he studied startup law and social innovation, and gained insight into the emerging startup scene in one of the continent’s most influential business hubs. He brings these insights into his work across the CEE region, with a particular focus on developing Hungary’s startup ecosystem. Talk with Donat in four languages about what you’re building, and if you really want to get to know him, invite him to play football, or mention rockets or helicopters.
